Sylvania Rural School District #1873

.
Sylvania Rural became a school district in 1907 under the name of Whitecote S D. and was located on SW 16-43-14 W2. Mr. Brook donated the one acre of land on the southeast corner of his quarter of section 16. School construction was financed by a $800.00 debenture issued December 4th 1907. Trustees the district were J.W. Bayliff as chairman, W. Ratcliffe Sr. as secretary-treasurer, and trustees W. Ratcliffe Sr., P. Jackson and R. Clay.

School opened on March II, 1908, with the first students: George Bayliff, Harry Playford, Alex Ratcliffe, David, Norman, Hazel and Myrna Jackson.

It might be of interest to note that the teacher's desk cost $12.65, a hand bell cost $1.00, twelve school desks cost $62.25, a thirty-six inch box stove was $16, a thermometer 50¢, one Webster Dictionary $6.50 and a strap was 25¢. Care-taking was done by the students with the teacher’s supervision for 5¢ per day.

In August 1908, the trustees petitioned the Department of Education to change the name of the school district to Sylvania.

Students in the Sylvania Rural School District attended Golburn School in 1916, 1917 and part of 1918, as there weren't enough pupils to keep the school open.

Colleen Ratcliffe was the last pupil to enrol at Sylvania Rural # 1873. The school closed on June 30, 1964 and the students were bussed in to Sylvania Hamlet School.
